sd-agent platform testing

March 11, 2009

Using Amazon EC2, we have just finished testing sd-agent, the monitoring agent for Server Density, on a number of operating system platforms. Amazon EC2 makes it easy to test on a wide range of different OSs because the servers can be created on demand and run for just a few minutes each, sufficient to complete all the necessary tests.

Since the agent is written in Python, a cross-platform programming language that is bundled as standard with most OSs, we expect the agent to work on a wide range of systems. We currently officially support Linux, Unix and Mac OS X with testing completed on:

  • CentOS 5.2 Final x86_64 (Python 2.4.3)
  • Debian 4.0 Etch Base i686 (Python 2.4.4)
  • Debian 5.0 Lenny Base i686 (Python 2.5.2)
  • Fedora Core 8 Base i386 (Python 2.5.1)
  • Fedora Core 8 Base x86_64 (Python 2.5.1)
  • Mac OS X 10.5.6 i386 (Python 2.5.1)

As our customer base grows, we intend to add more platforms to ensure we test on a representative range of systems that our customers actually use. This will include Windows support in the future. Want us to test on another platform? Let us know!
